Parkinson’s Disease
Welcome to Myoguide Academy’s Parkinson’s Disease course. This course was designed to share the most recent, pertinent research and information about Parkinson’s Disease (PD) so you can stay up to date.
You can expect to learn about the symptoms, risk factors, treatment options, disease progression, and epidemiology associated with PD in this free course.
PD 101:
The cardinal features of PD are tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity. Postural instability is another feature commonly mentioned in this category, but it generally occurs late in the course of the disease.
In addition to the cardinal manifestations, other motor features of PD include craniofacial (eg, masked facial expression, hypophonia), visual (e.g., hypometric saccades, eyelid-opening apraxia), musculoskeletal (e.g., micrographia, stooped posture), and gait (e.g., shuffling, short-stepped gait, freezing) abnormalities.
While PD has traditionally been considered a motor system disorder, it is now widely recognized to be a complex disorder with diverse clinical features that include neuropsychiatric and nonmotor manifestations in addition to its motor symptomatology. These features include the following:
- Cognitive dysfunction
- Psychosis
- Mood disorders including depression, anxiety, and apathy/abulia
- Sleep disturbances
- Fatigue
- Autonomic dysfunction
- Olfactory dysfunction
- Pain and sensory disturbances
- Dermatologic findings
This course will examine these features in-depth, sharing important research to enhance your learning. Along with the background information on PD, you will learn about the epidemiology, treatments, risk factors, and more.
