Anatomy of I-Engage Academy eLearning Courses: Lessons, Quizzes, and Worksheets

Each I-Engage Academy elearning course was designed to help learners absorb the content and apply it to their personal situations. By going through each lesson, taking quizzes, and filling out worksheets, learners are able to digest what they’ve learned. This article will outline the anatomy of our courses, and explain why each element is included.

Each example in this article comes from our Managing Pain with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy elearning course, in the Setting SMART Goals lesson.

Lessons

The lessons are written as concisely as possible, focusing on key points about the topics covered. They are divided into sections to help with mental information organization and readability. The writing is simple, yet informative. Additionally, we’ve included examples, diagrams, and images to illustrate the concepts.

Some lessons include a Reflect section with guiding questions. These questions are usually asking the learner how the information applies to them, or how they feel the topic has impacted them.

As the courses are geared towards pain patients, the lessons will always describe how the topic relates to chronic pain or living with pain. Further, the language used is accessible, encouraging, and inclusive.

Quizzes

Each lesson is followed by a short multiple choice quiz. The quiz helps to solidify what the learner has just read. By thinking critically about what each quiz question is asking, the learner can better gauge whether they understand the content or not. When a learner engages in the process of elimination while completing a multiple choice question, they are comparing each option against what they know–that translates to three or four opportunities to apply their knowledge per question.

The questions are not too difficult; however, they will test whether the learner has been paying attention or not. Someone who has actively read the content will be able to easily pass each quiz.

If they pass the quiz, they can move on to the next lesson, ready to build upon what they’ve learned. However, if they don’t pass the quiz, they will see which topics they need to review before continuing.

Worksheets

Many lessons include worksheets. In the Practice section of the lesson, learners can find the associated worksheet(s). They come in the format of a PDF download that they can print or fill out digitally.

The worksheets ask the learners relevant questions, helping them to apply what they’ve learned and write it down. The act of reflecting on the content and writing it down helps the information get better absorbed. Many of the worksheets facilitate planning or setting goals. This is a critical practice when living with chronic pain. After completing the exercises, the learners can do what they’ve planned. For instance, after completing a worksheet that helps the learner reflect on healthy meals they would like to try and the groceries required, they can use their plan to help them shop.

Here is an example of a worksheet to help determine a SMART goal:
